Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from the family, and so she was fostered by her mother grandparents and godparents. In her early years, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to associations with words. Ford's love for acting grew in her early years. She was a part of the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she didn't fit in. Ford reapplied to Central School of Speech and Drama and, on her fourth attempt she was admitted. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford's first appearance on television was a 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the moment she was done with school, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate was also a regular performer in the theatre, and later joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001. Tate started to get noticed due to her stand-up comedy in the year 1996.
